A gift for greater independence and lasting friendships

Santa Cruz Training Programs, Inc. is thankful to the many who share their time and patience in the community for our members to exercise their minds, bodies, and social skills, like teaching Tai Chi or how to brush horses at a ranch, giving them space to explore a store for a U.S. flag, and enjoying their company as they visit a restaurant to enjoy snacks and coffee. To the ones who patron our La Castellana Bakery & Cafe, Nayo’s Plant Nursery, or those who take advantage of the groundskeeping crew, thank you. You dignify the work place and say yes that all abilities can work in an understanding environment.

Donations will support the general cost that surrounds our members’ care. Some examples of that general cost would be stocking bathrooms, renovations to support services (ex. weatherized windows in group homes, new patios for the Cafe and DTTA program, expanding the Bakery), food costs for 14 residents in our three group homes, and gas and maintenance for 26 fleet vehicles to bring members to our programs.

Other ways to support people with disabilities

  1. Checks. Mail to:

  2. Visit the Cafe, the Plant Nursery, and…does your yard need some cleaning?. Think of us for catering and events. Order platters and birthday cakes. Remember us during the holiday season, we make tamales! Hire the groundskeeping crew. Shop at the plant nursery. Give us a call at 520-287-2043, press 1.
  3. Social media. Sharing (and liking) is caring! Raise awareness and normalize people with disabilities having fun, living life, and working.
  4. Tax credits. The forms for Arizona tax credits are at the Arizona Department of Revenue. If you have questions, please talk with your tax preparer.
  5. Donor-Advised funds. DAF Direct link for Santa Cruz Training Programs, Inc.
  6. Trusts & Wills. Name SCTP as a beneficiary in trusts and wills. Wilma Rose Group Home is named in honor of a donor when she graced us with her home at her passing.

Donating physical items and time

Home furniture, arts & crafts supplies, easy games

We appreciate all items donated for our members’ use. With home furniture, we first ask the 14 residents at our group homes if they like anything that was donated. For arts & crafts, they have fun with everything and helps them with fine motor skills to bead, paint, and color. Games are used in our DTTA programs which run the whole spectrum of special needs, from simple 24 piece puzzles, memory games, word games (UpWords), all the way to playing simple sports games. Simply call the office: 520-287-2043, press 6.

Joining in the fun with Volunteering

Do you have a favorite hobby? We love group classes at our social and life skills for adults program (DTTA). Some volunteers come once or twice a week, but of course, you can talk with the program coordinator and see what works for you. Some teach whole group activities, while others have taught small groups.

Do you like to drive? We need drivers to fill in odd spots in the day or substitute when someone cannot make it in. Our members travel all over Nogales and other nearby cities visiting new places, working, volunteering, and also sometimes need basic pick-up and drop-off at the end of the day.

Crafters, when November and December come around, our holiday thank you cards are a huge project. Call the office at 520-281-2043 and press 6 to coordinate with the receptionist. Your time helps us show our appreciation to the community!

Writers, we could use help searching for and writing grants to grow our services and help even more people.

Gardeners! If you like plants, we have a plant nursery that always needs care with watering and weeding.

Volunteer Requirements

  1. A fingerprint clearance card.
  2. Pass a background check.
  3. Possible training required. Total hours for training could be 16-24 hours spread out over a few days during the first few months. The standard training includes CPR and Article IX (rights of people with disabilities).
  4. For volunteer drivers, you will need PASS (Passenger, Assistance, Safety, and Sensitivity) training to operate the vehicle and be sensitive to the needs of those with mobility concerns. Together with the agency, the state and our contract with the Department of Developmental Disabilities might add more training as needed.
